Christmas 2019: special services and outreach events

All are welcome to join us as we celebrate Christmas. We have lots of special services and outreach events planned, so do come along on any of the occasions listed below - we would love to see you there!

If you need a handy guide to everything in one place, you can download a print version of the United Church Christmas 2019 information leaflet. This also includes details of all the usual services taking place in December, on both Sundays and Wednesdays.

Sunday 1 December, 5.30pm: Advent Carol Service

Please join us for this special Advent Carol Service, which will also give us an opportunity to thank the Revd Steph Jenner for her work in the circuit and wish her well for the future. The service will be led by Revd Gwyneth Owen and Revd Peter Clark.

Afternoon Tea will be served in the church hall from 4 pm, and we hope to see as many of you as possible.

Friday 13 December, 3.00pm: Quiet Christmas

This a traditional service for those who want to celebrate Christmas quietly. It may be particularly valued by those who are on their own, who are recently bereaved, or who are feeling that life is a challenge at the moment.

Refreshments will be served afterwards in the foyer.

Sunday 22 December, 6.30pm: Carol Service

All are welcome to join us for this beautiful service telling the Christmas Story through carols.

There will be traditional carol favourites, readings and special items performed by the choir. The church will be lit appropriately so that we can really feel the wonder of Christmas.

Tuesday 24 December, 4.00pm: Christingle Service

A wonderful, creative service for all the family - there is always magic in the air as the children create their Christingle with its orange, ribbon, candle and fruits.

Christmas starts here!

Tuesday 24 December, 11.30pm: Midnight Communion

An hour-long service to take us into Christmas Day.

Wednesday 25 December, 10.30am: Christmas Day Morning Service

This is a shortened morning service - about 45 minutes, but a wonderful way to celebrate the good news of Christmas Day.

Thursday 12 - Monday 23 December: Journey to the Stable

This is an interactive journey into the meaning of Christmas. Suitable for adults and children, it finishes with a recreation of the stable scene itself.

Come and reflect on the journey with its seven stations focusing on a person or a part of the Christmas story, each with a reading and reflections; or just come and spend some time at the stable.

Full interactive journey and stable:

Thursday 12 (11am - 3pm); Friday 13 (11am - 2pm); Saturday 14 (11am - 3pm)

Stable only:

Monday 16 - Saturday 21 and Monday 23 (10am - 12.30am)

Saturday 21 and Monday 23 December, 11am - 3pm: Feed me, change me, love me

In the final, mad rush before Christmas Day, this provides facilities for anyone in the town needing to feed and change babies, or wanting a brief respite from the commercial activity.

The Church will be open for baby changing and feeding in a safe, comfortable and private area. There will also be supervised activities for slightly older children, so that mums and babies can be left undisturbed without worrying about how to keep siblings and friends occupied.

This is no charge for this provision.

Thursday 5 December, 6.30 - 8.30pm: Cracker Night

The United Church will be open as part of the Dorchester Chamber of Business's annual Cracker Night.

There will be carols to sing, supported by the church's brass players and singers; craft activities for children to take part in; and mince pies, tea and coffee.

Everyone is welcome to join us for a break, a sing, and chance to refresh!

Saturday 7 December, 7.30pm: Encore Singers Christmas concert

The Encore Singers are well known for the delightful concerts - this one will be held in aid of Action for Children, and will feature as guest artists the Crossways Village Handbell Ringers. This will be a fantastic evening, to really get you into the feel of a traditional Christmas.

Admission is free, but there will be a retiring collection. Refreshments will also be available during the interval.

Saturday 14 December, 6.00pm: Flutecakes concert - Festive & Flutey Favourites

Flutecakes concerts are well established and always a treat – come along to hear lots of your favourites, many chosen especially for this time of year. Afterwards, even more treats – festive fare will be served, with drinks and cake.

Admission is free, with a retiring collection for Dorchester Child Contact Centre.

16, 18, 23 December: Carol singing around Dorchester

The annual Carol singing through the streets of Dorchester, accompanied by the United Church Brass:

Monday 16th: Old Poundbury (meet to move off at 6.30pm in Poundbury Road, near the junction with Normandy Way)

Wednesday 18th: Fordington Fields (meet to move off at 6.30pm at the bus stop opposite The Trumpet Major)

Monday 23rd: Monmouth Road area (meet to move off at 6.30pm at the South Court Avenue roundabout)

Everyone is always welcome to come and join us as we sing well known carols for local residents - who often come out to listen, and make requests! Even if you are not sure about singing in public - do come along, as we always need door-to-door collectors.

THANK YOU to everyone who helped to organise and / or took part in the carol singing and collections. Quite apart from the joy it provided to the many local residents who came out to hear the music, a total of well over £400 was raised for AfC - a fantastic result.

A knitting opportunity: Christmas Angels

Would you be able to knit some Christmas Angels to support the work of the Action for Children fundraising committee? Last year, some 400 knitted angels were donated to families and children during the Carol singing and Journey to the Stable events - and we'd like to do the same this year.

You can explore the background to the work, and find more about how to get involved (including how to get the pattern for the angels), by reading this information sheet.
