Christian Aid Week 2021 Autumn Update

Christian Aid Week 2021 took place between 10th and 16th May.

There were lots of opportunities to get involved, despite the uncertainties caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Christian Aid Week web site had a huge number of ideas, challenges and events, all of which raised money for those who need it most. Most of these resources are still available - as is the Donate page, where you can still contribute at the click of a button.

In addition, a series of events was planned for Dorchester and the local area. Some of these went ahead as planned, but others were re-scheduled for the autumn, in light of various lockdown restrictions.

You can see below the events still to come in September and October, as well as an update on some of the activities that still took place locally in May

Now published: Christian Aid Recipe Book

With over one hundred recipes from more than fifty contributors, this has now been published. It contains a huge variety of recipes to suit all tastes - everyone will be able to find plenty here to make and enjoy: you can see just some of the enticing ideas in the picture below.

This is very clearly a local Christian Aid Recipe Book (with many recipes provided by members of the United Church Dorchester), but it has been professionally produced - so it will make it an ideal Christmas gift!

The book is now available from the Church Shop: suggested donation /price £10 - all proceeds to Christian Aid.

Saturday 4 SeptemberSponsored walk to the River Jordan (in Bowleaze Cove, Weymouth!)

This year's walk was again a highly successful and enjoyable event. A dozen happy walkers made the trip from St Peter's Church in Dorchester down to Bowleaze Cove, in good weather - as you can see from the pictures below. We were delighted to have walkers from different churches, and to know that the event raised some healthy sponsorship for Christian Aid.

Friday 15 October: Street Collection

This additional collection will take place between 9.00am and 5.00pm, with necessary precautions in place.

We do need volunteers to help with this so if you feel you could give an hour during the day, we would be very grateful: please let Tony Boyden know what times(s) you could offer by using the Christian Aid Contact form.

Saturday 16 October, 10.00am - 1.30pm: Christian Aid Market

The Christian Aid Market will now take place on Saturday 16 October in the Hall at United Church Dorchester. In addition to the usual stalls, there will be Ploughman’s Lunches served from 12 pm

Again offers of help on the day would be very much appreciated, and help with setting up the day before (Friday) would also be greatly welcomed. Please contact Tony Boyden using the Christian Aid Contact form if you can help in any way.

Sunday 17 October, 4.00pm: Ecumenical Service

This year's service will be held at United Church Dorchester. It will be led by Revd. John Yarrien with guest speaker, Rob Pearce, formerly responsible for Christian Aid in the south of England.  Rob has the reputation of being an engaging and inspirational speaker.

Event from May: Christian Aid Quiz

Following our very successful quiz last year, Mary Martin kindly produced a new one.

First prize was £10; second prize, £5. Cost of entry was £3 and the quiz can still be downloaded here (for interest only: please don't send it in, as entries closed on June 5!).

Event from May: Street Collection

This still went ahead but using collecting buckets on the pavement rather than collection tins and with collectors wearing masks.

Events from May: Dorchester and District funds raised

Despite the many restrictions caused by the pandemic, the Dorchester and District still managed to raise £6,000 for Christian Aid for the official 'week' - a hugely creditable achievement in the circumstances, with further events still to come.
