Wessex URC Synod is holding another ‘Big Day Out’ on Saturday 4th May. Following the success of last time’s event, it will again be held at Hollycombe Steam in the Country, Liphook, Hampshire, which includes a traditional steam fairground – there will be more steam rides open this year. Synod attractions for the event will include a large marquee with worship, stories and entertainment, as well as a market place with crafts, Synod Youth Executive, forest church and a nature walk. Hollycombe’s fabulous new café will be open but you can bring your own picnic. Synod subsidised tickets (booked in advance): Adults £8, Children £5.
Christian Aid Week will take place this year between May 12-18. It will begin in Dorchester with an ecumenical service at St. Mary’s on Sunday, May 12, in the presence of the mayor, Councillor Alastair Chisholm: everyone is welcome. We are looking for volunteers to help across hourly slots for our collection in South Street on Friday, 17 May. We are also looking for volunteers for house-to-house collections, asking them to ‘Try for Ten’ – visiting ten houses only in their locality. Of course, if people would like to collect from more houses, that would be very welcome! Events formerly planned for Christian Aid Week will be held later in the year with both the Joint Market and the Walk to the River Jordan taking place in the autumn. If you would like to help or need further information please contact Tony Boyden: email ‘Christian Aid Contact’.
The Tolpuddle Old Chapel is now open to visitors, with free entry to this historic building and its long association with the Methodist Church. This means that in addition to occasional events, the Chapel is open every Monday and Thursday morning, from 10.00am – 12.00pm.
The Dorchester Town Chaplaincy team wants to recruit more people who can offer support and encouragement for shop workers, market traders, shoppers and anybody working in the town of Dorchester. The team is drawn from members of local churches. Each week chaplains visit the town centre. It is an initiative of Churches Together in Dorchester, backed by Dorchester BID and Dorchester Town Council. See the Dorchester Chaplains information sheet for more information, including the possibility of joining an introductory training session.
It is now a year since Traidcraft went into administration, and their own brand products are, sadly, no longer available. The United Church remains committed to Fair Trade, and we continue to use Fair Trade tea and coffee at church events. The Church shop stocks many Fair Trade items, including Divine chocolate, cocoa, coffee, peanut butter, honey, Fair Trade cards and gifts. Thank you for your support.
